Ancient Kauri Wood  35

The Ancient Kauri Wood sounds really interesting.  Here's just a bit of information I've pulled from the web, this is NOT petrified wood. :

Now you can actually have and use the world's oldest wood

  • Every tree grew for at least 1,200 years
  • Preserved underground for 50,000 years
  • Every board is certified and guaranteed
  • Ancient Kauri is the oldest workable timber on Earth

Ecologically Friendly

  • Excavated land is returned to natural state
  • No living trees are harvested

Stunning colors and finishes

  • Rich gold and cognac colors
  • Exciting and distinctive grains
  • Highly polished finish is rich and luminous
  • Deep opalescent finish that shimmers and shifts
  • Glistens as if lit from within

Better late than never! That was a tough wait. I am excited to hear about this pattern - I like the description of this 33 a lot. I am looking forward to seeing a GEC take on a pen knife. I have a feeling the result will be very nice, as GEC seems to be getting better and better.

I just compared those dimensions to the #25 I have on me, and the #33 will be thinner and narrower. Should be a nice fit in the GEC lineup.

I think I will have to get an ancient kauri wood for sure. Can I reserve one with you, Greg?

    cool, thanks for the info.
i remember looking into that ancient kauri wood years ago.
its only drawback is its (lack of) hardness.
its janka score is only around 600, making it about as hard as pine - not exactly prime handle material.
unless gec will be using some very hardcore stabilization, these handles will dent, crack and chip like nobody's business.
    it is very attractive, though.
i'll be interested to hear how they solve this problem.

The handle material is undergoing a stabilization process right now and I have been cautioned that if it doesn't work out as anticipated, GEC will cancel it's release.  Considering the age of the wood and it's uniqueness, I don't think I'd probably be carrying around a knife with handles 40-50,000 year old for my every day carry.  Got a feeling most of these will end up in display cases rather than pockets.

Southwestern Acrylic is an Artifical Turquoise looking Acrylic. It was used on the 48 Western Trappers.A good resemblance to the real thing[for acrylic].

I dont think I will carry it either but if it comes out, set one aside for me. I know a display case that could use it...Thanks Greg

Morrie, it has to be perfect or it isn't "right". We'll keep beating this horse until it is.
        Hopefully we'll soon know.
