Steve's Review of #25 Barlow Northfield EZ Open "Burnt Stag"

I received the knife from Greg and carried it Jan 6 through February 6th.  I am not a "hard" knife user - mostly around the house since I'm semi-retired and primarily write at home.

First impression of the knife was the fit and finish were excellent.  The knife was also sharp enough for me out of the box (I use the AG Russell test of slicing one of those styrofoam packing piees). I found the spring/pull to be just right.  I also showed the knife to a journeyman smith friend of mine and he liked it too.

What I didn't like about the knife was the sharp edges on the tang, which kept biting me when I reached into my pocket for the knife.  Those edges are sharp enough that they could be used to open a taped box.

I also found the knife too thick for my tastes.  This is easily remedied by going to a different and slimmer handle material.  With a knife this size I like to carry it in the change pocket of my jeans and it was difficult to get out due to the thickness.  I also do not hard use a knife like this and so would not get a knife this size with burnt stag handles.  This is not a criticism of the knife, by the way, but a personal preference.

As noted above, I'm not a hard user so the knife only saw minimal duty opening packages, envelopes, packs of cellophane wrapped gum.  I decided to give the knife to my friend, Pat since I knew he would use it harder within the time frame I wanted to post this review.

My summary would be this is an excellently made knife, sharp enough out of the box.  The only suggestion I have would be to round the tang edges a bit.  I don't think you can beat this knife for the money.  I should also add that carrying it daily for a month did nothing to mar the handles or the bolsters...holds up well against pocket change and keys!

Steve

    Thanks for the review, Steve.

I've got a pair of the EZ opens and I like them a lot. As far as the sharp edges on the tang, for a daily user, I would knock the edges off with a small whetstone if it bothered me.

I usually carry mine around in one of Ron Ryder's leather slip pouches. That takes care of that issue for me.
