Anyone using a Great Eastern with Stainless Blade(s)???

A few weeks back I had someone ask me if I had an opinion regarding the 440 steel Great Eastern was using in their "Great Eastern" knives.  Sorry I can't remember who asked me, but I'd replied that I planned on trying one out in the near future and...alas, I haven't had a chance to really put one to the test.

Anyone out there used a "Great Eastern" and have any comments regarding the blade?  I'll admit to being a great fan of the high carbons and have stuck with the Tidioute's and Northfield's so far.  There's some great stainless out there and it definitely has a place in the field.

Would really appreciate any comments.

I haven't yet carried a stainless GEC myself. I've been thinking about using my unnumbered stag muskrat. I too would like to know how they hold up. Right now I have a stag linerlock, a 2 blade stag trapper and a plastic handled trapper in EDC rotation. The carbon blades have been good knives.

Same here.  I have a real liking for the carbons.  In fact, I recently picked up a pair of Cold Steel SRK's used with Carbon V just to see how well they hold an edge.  (why I bought 2, I have no idea)   Also used to sell a LOT of Bark Rivers and really got hooked on their A2 blades.  Fine blades!!  In fact, I held on for a long time when there was talk about them coming out with a folder.   But along came GEC, and no regrets!!

I may just break down and give a stainless a try.

A buddy of mine from work carries a 23 Pioneer single blade (carbon) with buffalo handles. He came by tonight and borrowed my sharpning stone and leather to touch up his blade. He's not into Great Easterns like me (he's only got the one) but he was really impressed with how sharp he got it and was going on about how good the steel must be to get the edge he did. It was scary sharp!!

I've been using a GE stainless Scout 2 blade on and off for about a 12 month now. The steel seems fine and the scales on the knife are excellent, but the spring/snap is heavy and you have to take care.I've also used a Horse Cut Bone fixed blade in stainless, a fine small belt knife in the Outer pattern.Sharpens well and uses well too, so I don't think anybody needs to look down on GE stainless as some kind of poor relation. The fact is, all these knives GE Tidioute and Great Northern cry out for use and not just languishing as a safe-queens in my view and experience. I too have been waiting for a Bark River folder but I suspect it's just a myth and ,looking at the company's attitude will remain so. GE Cutlery has occupied this space very well indeed, all I would like to see in both stainless and carbon is a smaller range of knives, English Jack, Peanut, Mini Trapper or Sodbuster in the future. I think it might happen too!

Well I broke down this weekend and started using a Great Eastern 53 Muskrat with stag. Just had to see what their stainless is like. I'm going to put together a little review after I've used it a bit. Yesterday and today it saw 'garden' duty. Everything from opening bags, cutting nylon ties, a little stake whittling, etc. I'll let you know what I think.

And Will, I'm pulling for the small range of knives also....and who knows!! I think it'll happen also.
